One thing you can do to help prevent any oven-related disasters from occurring is to provide some basic maintenance to your oven. One of the most basic, yet important aspects of maintenance is just paying attention to the condition of your stove and its various components.
Here are some easy maintenance tips and a few of the more common problems we see.
Most ranges and/or ovens come with a broiler pan that is made of porcelain-covered steel. To maintain it in pristine condition, clean it with a non-abrasive cleanser.
The control panels on most ovens are glass or painted metal. Again, a non-abrasive cleanser is the safest choice for cleaning these surfaces. Apply the cleanser to a soft, damp rag and wipe the surface. Never spray cleansers directly on the control panel.
Once again, a non-abrasive cleanser should be used on porcelain cooktops. As with the control panel, apply the cleanser to a soft, damp rage first, and then wipe the surface. Do not apply the cleanser directly to the cooktop.
Burner drip pans
The drip pans or bowls are located under the grates on a gas stove, and under the heating element on an electric stove. They generally need to be replaced every two to three years because once they are stained, it is almost impossible to get them completely clean.
Glass windows and cooktops
Glass and ceramic cooktops should always be cleaned with a product made specifically for this purpose. The glass window on your oven can be cleaned with any oven glass cleaner. But remember – don’t try to clean any glass surfaces that are hot!
You can use dishwashing detergent and a damp rag to clean the knobs on your oven. However, if the lettering or numbers are worn away or no longer readable, you might consider having the knobs replaced.
The lights in the interior of you oven generally use a 40 watt appliance bulb. You might have to remove a glass cover or dome to reach the bulb. Our technicians can handle that for you if it seems like more than you want to take on.
